Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Thanks to our customers for raising $900 for Earth Day!

Starting on April 2nd and running through Earth Day (April 22nd), Sunday Afternoons ran a fundraiser to set aside 10% of all retail sales from our Sport Hat and Kids’ Fun Bucket to give to some of our favorite organizations that help protect our local and global Forests, Deserts, Rivers, Lakes and Oceans.  From April 2th to the 22nd our customers were able to raise over $900! We are happy to annouce that the money will now be equally divided between our three pre-selected organizations. KSwild, The Surfrider Foundation, and ONDA. Sunday Afternoons is a environmentally conscience company and supports local organizations that help promote restoration and conservation projects.

A big Thank You! goes out to our customers who were able to raise this money. We would also like to thank the organizations themselves for all that they do to help protect and restore our environment.  If you would like to help get involved you can visit the following organizations websites:

Come help raise awarenes of Melanoma

Come help raise awarenes of Melanoma

Live near the Fullerton area in California? On Saturday, May 22nd between 8am – 1pm is the 4th annual 5K Run/Walk, Health Fair, and Free Skin Cancer Screening for the general public in support of the Melanoma Research Foundation. The first run begins at 8:00 am.

This event is hosted by William P. Baugh, M.D and is a great event to help raise awareness for Melanoma.  You can read a bit about history below.

The Melanoma Research Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to “support medical RESEARCH for finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma. Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the U.S. and worldwide. In 2008, it was estimated that 1 in 60 people in the United States would develop invasive melanoma in their lifetime. In 2009, the number rose to 1 in 53 people. On average, melanoma affects over 65,000 people annually and is responsible for over 9,000 deaths. These numbers can be significantly lowered by having a simple, five-minute skin cancer screening allowing doctors to catch melanoma before becoming fatal.

William P. Baugh, M.D, is a highly skilled dermatologist who received his medical degree from Loma Linda University Medical Center and completed his residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego ranked in the top 1% in the nation.  He is board certified in Dermatology, a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Fellow of the Skin Cancer Foundation Society, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.  He has been selected as a Physician of Excellence for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010 by the Orange County Medical Association.

In 2007, in his desire to fight Melanoma, and raise awareness against this deadly cancer, Dr. Baugh decided to utilize the month of May (recognized as National Melanoma Month) to host the first “Miles for Melanoma” 5K Run/Walk in the city of Fullerton. Since its first year in 2007 the run has shown great progress and has grown from 230 participants to 420 last year.  Other events going on during the event are a Health and Wellness Fair with vendors ranging from sun protective products and clothing, medical personnel, restaurants, fitness centers, family recreation centers, Dental and Chiropractic services, International Relief Organizations, and many more. There will also be free food provided by Rubio’s, Summit Event Catering, and Z-Pizza. Great prizes, including free plane rides, Vans skateboards, restaurant gift cards, and high priced skin care products and treatments, will be raffled off at the event. The kids will be able to participate in their own 0.5 K fun run and will receive a commemorative medal and t-shirt upon completion. Game and activity tables will also be available for children. Dr. Baugh along with other volunteer physicians will be offering free skin cancer screenings to all run participants.

This event is held in the city of Fullerton. Please bring your friends and family and enjoy free food and entertainment as you help fight and find a cure for Melanoma Skin Cancer.

The event will be held at: Laguna Road Elementary School – 300 Laguna Road – Fullerton, CA 92835

Robbin playing a game of Tennis.

Robbin playing a game of Tennis.

It’s a new year and soon Spring will be here.  When we think of Spring we think of nice weather, sunny days, and going outdoors.  Spring is also a great time of year to play Tennis, but being out in the sun you need to remember to stay protected from the harmful UV rays.  We have quite a selection of sun protective clothing and hats that work great with Tennis or any other outdoor sport.  Today Robbin is wearing our Sport Hat in white/navy and our Lightweave long sleeve sun tee.  Both look great together and keep you protected.

Also remember even when wearing sun protective clothing exposed skin like your lips can burn, so it’s important to remember to wear sun protective lip balm as well as sunscreen if you choose to wear shorts. Taking these little extra precautions will insure you avoid painful sun burns and make the most with your time in the sun.

Robbin getting ready to golf.

Robbin getting ready to golf.

This week Robbin is dressed as a golfer. Golfing is something that can be done year round, so even in the Winter months it’s important to wear sun protection.  We offer a lot of great hats and clothing that work perfectly with golfing.  Robbin is wearing our Fairway Hat and our Lightweave Polo, which both look great out at the course.  If you’re golfing 18 holes during the Spring and Summer months don’t forget to wear sunscreen as the UV index is highest in those months.

This week Robbin is geared up as a surfer.

Continuing our series, our VP Robbin is dress and geared up as a surfer. Being a surfer himself Robbin is a strong supporter of our sun protective water line. Sun protection is definitely important in the water.  Water reflects UV rays and so spend time out in it will definitely increase your UV exposure, Therefore, you need to make sure you have proper sun protection to keep your skin safe.

Robbin is wearing our Offshore Water Hat, which is part of our technical line of hats. The Offshore Water Hat has been designed specifically for water sports. It is designed for dynamic water and wind performance while offering maximum sun protection of face, ears, eyes, and neck.  Excellent for Surf, Stand Up Paddle, Raft, Swim, Windsurf, Kiteboard, Boat, etc.

Side release buckle allows quick one hand removal of hat. To fit, adjust rear sizing tape before attaching neck strap. Also, Remember to use SPF rated sunscreen and lip balm as water reflects UV rays. Have fun and protect your skin!

Next, Robbin is wearing our Swim Shirt which offers ultimate upper body protection against UV rays in the water. Its 4 way stretch lightweight nylon/spandex fabric allows easy in-the-water movement for swimming.

Often we are asked, “I (insert favorite hobby) quite often, what is the best sun hat or shirt to wear?”. Well you’re in luck! We have a new series dedicated to just that. Periodically we will answer your questions about which products are best used with a particular hobby or past-time. This week is the fisherman.

A good amount of the time fishing is spent outdoor in the sun, so it’s very important to protect your skin while fishing. We have a great selection of sun hats and sun protective clothing and many of them work perfectly for fishing. Here is an example of a popular fishing outfit modeled by our lovable VP Robbin (looks like he has a big one on the other end of the line).
